The Japanese automaker recently unveiled its newest product to do just that: the “Smart Rearview Mirror.”
We’ve all been the driver of a packed car, whether it is full with boxes for a move or people for a night out. The jammed rear of the cabin obstructs our view, so we rely solely on the side-view mirrors and intuition. While we are not always cognizant of it, our eyes often turn to the rearview mirror to get a better idea of our surroundings and the possible changes of traffic flow as more people enter the roadway. It is an essential part of our safety. When it is obstructed, we limit our ability to manage the drive.
The Nissan “Smart Rearview Mirror” still operates as a standard mirror. Strict United States’ laws require a mirror for rearview purposes. This product, however, offers an additional perk that can help ensure you remain acutely aware of the traffic behind you. It can switch to display a view from a camera mounted just above the brake lights, and the image comes through on an LCD screen installed just behind the fade-away mirror glass.
A live video stream from the 1.3 megapixel camera gives you the clarity you need to see your surroundings. The display can also adjust to minimize distortions from sunlight and headlights. Nissan focused on creating the perfect device, so it took particular care to ensure the image displayed appears just as an image would in a traditional rearview mirror. This great innovation is another fundamental step toward the future technology of automobiles, and we, for one – or should it be some? – embrace these advances.
